Dr. Tara Thompson, DNP, PMHNP-BC is a Board Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner providing care to patients in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. Dr. Tara started her career as a therapist after earning a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology degree from Eastern University where she was trained in cognitive-behavioral therapy and systemic therapy. She later decided to change direction and pursue an education and career in nursing where she worked in cardiology and neurology. She eventually made the decision to return back to her “first love”, psychiatry, and obtained a Master of Science Degree in Nursing and later a Doctorate of Nursing Practice from Drexel University. Dr. Tara has been working with patients across the life span in multiple settings including outpatient psychiatry where she treats individuals with mood disorders, anxiety disorders, ADHD and trauma related disorders. She also has experience in acute psychiatric inpatient care treating individuals in psychiatric crisis, and in consultation-liaison psychiatry focusing on the care of patients with comorbid psychiatric and general medical conditions.
Dr. Tara believes that people are multi-faceted and understanding their lives and experiences requires the ability to look at treatment from multiple perspectives including psychological, biological and developmental. She believes in nurturing the capacity for resilience and growth while diagnosing and treating mental health. When she is not working she enjoys spending time with her family, friends and her “fur babies”. She loves to travel, watch horror movies, read fiction and Zumba!
